The Breaking Down Barriers Commission will provide solutions to Britain's opportunity problems

Transcript

Nick Forbes CBE:

We're very excited to have launched the Breaking Down Barriers Commission.

This brings together businesses and industry leaders to identify the most significant barriers to opportunity across our country, with a real and clear focus on solutions and how industry and policymakers cross -party can work together to deliver them.

As we approach the next general election and a potential change of government, the question of how we can deliver equality of opportunity for all is more important than ever.

We know that many of the solutions to breaking down barriers are already there.

Businesses are leading innovations, people development, organisational development and targeted investment that is already lifting up communities.

We want to bring all of this together in a strategic way that creates a blueprint of what great looks like.

So this work focuses on 14 areas aligned with the Purpose Goals, tackling the 14 biggest challenges to improving social mobility.

And these are the building blocks of equality of opportunity, from how we tackle health inequalities, harness the energy transition, how we create infrastructure for opportunity, deliver positive destinations post -16 for those furthest removed from those opportunities, and how we can build sustainable communities and deliver the homes that people need.

It's an ambitious programme, but we're really looking forward to it.

And working with our fantastic partners from across all sectors, we are absolutely committed to delivering practical solutions to many of the problems this country faces.
